ILLUMINATING THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE POWER:
April 14 is Lineworker Appreciation Day
North Dakota winters are unforgiving, with below-zero temperatures, snowstorms and the prairie wind bringing treacherous conditions. In these extreme conditions, reliable electricity isn’t just a convenience, it’s a lifeline.
Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative (BDEC) lineworkers play a crucial role in ensuring members’ homes remain heated, businesses stay operational and emergency services continue to function. These dedicated professionals work tirelessly to keep the power flowing, often facing some of the most challenging conditions imaginable. That’s why every year, on the second Monday in April, we shine a light on their contributions and commitment.
Lineworker Appreciation Day is an opportunity to recognize the hardworking men and women who power our lives. To serve as a lineworker requires intense dedication to one’s community. The job is dangerous and the hours are long, but they continue to show up 24/7/365 in hard hats and gloves to ensure our homes are warm and our communities are safe.
Lineworkers are the calm before, during and after the storm. They are first responders when extreme weather strikes. When the lights go out, they jump into action, working tirelessly to restore power to every member.
Sacrifices are part of the job. Lineworkers put others before themselves, answering emergency calls at all hours. As a result, they often miss family dinners, big events and holidays.
The physical demands of their work are equally intense. Hauling heavy equipment, climbing poles and trekking through rough terrain are all part of the job. Lineworkers climb a pole with up to 40 pounds of safety gear and tools.
At BDEC, lineworkers set the tone for our safety culture. They don’t cut corners and never compromise safety. Even in the extreme heat, bitter cold, wind and rain, their focus does not waver.
Powering the lives of BDEC’s member-owners would be impossible to do without lineworkers. Their strength, endurance and unwavering commitment ensure our communities stay powered, no matter what Mother Nature throws their way.
Thank you to our lineworkers, whose grit, skill and dedication keep our communities illuminated. This Lineworker Appreciation Day, take a second to look up. If you see a lineworker, give a wave. A little
gratitude can mean the world to those who help keep our world running.
Until next time,
Jerry King
