The future of reliable electricity: Powering our communities for tomorrow
As our economy grows, so does our need for electricity. From data centers and new manufacturing facilities to the devices we use every day, demand for power is soaring. In fact, U.S. electricity consumption is set to hit record highs over the next two years. And it’s expected to at least double by 2050.
At the same time, the supply of electricity is shrinking. Many reliable power plants are being retired too soon, creating challenges in supplying electricity. So, how do we ensure a steady, affordable power supply for homes, businesses and industries?
A balanced approach
Meeting our energy needs requires a smart mix of power sources and investments in modern infrastructure. That’s the role of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, the primary power supplier for Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative.
Basin Electric, based in Bismarck, provides electricity to 140 electric cooperative systems across nine states, serving about 3 million consumers. Its approach is all about balance, using a mix of energy sources to reduce reliance on any one type, ensuring reliability no matter the weather or market conditions.
Investing in power
To meet rising demand, Basin Electric is investing nearly $8 billion over the next decade in new and existing power generation and transmission.
Here’s how:
• $5.3 billion for new power generation
• $1.2 billion for new transmission lines
• $1.3 billion to upgrade existing infrastructure
One major project is the Bison Generation Station, a nearly $4 billion natural gas power plant near Epping in Williams County. Once completed, this facility will generate approximately 1,470 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to support homes, businesses, farms and industrial growth in our region.
