Jerry KingWhy we schedule planned power outages

ChecklistWe know power outages can be inconvenient. But sometimes, they are necessary to ensure safe, reliable electricity for years to come.

Burke-Divide Electric Cooperative schedules planned power outages so our crews can safely complete routine maintenance, upgrade aging equipment and prepare our system for future growth. By taking care of these needs in a controlled and scheduled way, we help prevent larger, unexpected outages down the road.

When we schedule a planned power outage, we do our best to give our members time to prepare. Members are notified of planned power outages by phone and through our social media channels. To ensure you receive planned outage notifications, check the “Home #” listed on the return stub of your bill. That’s the number we’ll call. If you receive a call about a planned power outage, it means the outage will affect you.

When we have a planned outage that will affect a large number of members, we use our after-hours call center to notify members. Those calls will always come from the same number, 800-858-3487. With all the spam calls we receive in today’s world, we suggest adding this number to your cellphone contacts. We also encourage you to follow us on our social media channels.

While turning off the power on purpose may seem frustrating, it’s also a proactive step toward a stronger, more reliable electric system. These improvements help us serve you better, not just today, but well into the future.

So, the next time you hear about a planned outage, know that it’s more than just a temporary disruption. It means your co-op is working hard to power your home – and your community – more safely and reliably than ever.

Until next time,
